Budget Lip Liners that match Luxe Lippies

I’ve been drafting this post in my head for over a year now & even accumulated a few lip pencils in anticipation that they might be a good match for a potential lippie one day.  But it seems that it wasn’t until I acquired my new camera and wooden accessories that I finally got around to putting this post together.

The inspiration for this post came to me from the many times I’ve tried on a luxury lipstick brand on counter and was even prepared to purchase a matching lip pencil if they had one.  Instead I was suggested a completely different shade (eg. a MLBB lip pencil to go with a red lip pencil, or a rose pink pencil for a hot pink lippie and so on) in an effort to please me.  On such occasions, I immediately make a beeline for MAC and Bobbi Brown to search for a matching lip pencil, but I realise that not everyone is prepared to fork out thirty-ish dollars for it.  So I set myself a challenge of finding lip pencils from budget brands to match higher end lipsticks.

I happened to find matching lipsticks & lip pencils across 4 colour groups – red, nude, two pinks and wine.  I skipped orange as my Inglot coral lip pencil didn’t match any of my orange/coral lipsticks.

The Lip Pencils (L-R):

Australis Lip Pencil – Kiss Me Quick (pink)

Revlon Colorstay Lipliner – Red (red)

Rimmel Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner – Natural (nude)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Wine (wine)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Indian Pink (pink)

The reason I paired Clinique Chubby Stick in “Heaping Hazelnut” with a warmer nude lip pencil is because I have a flushed lip tone.  You can of course opt for a lighter or warmer nude pencil depending on your lip tone.  I got so many compliments with this combination that one of my friends immediately purchased both items the same day she spotted me wearing this.

Surprisingly there are not that many blue red lip liners out there from budget brands, and Revlon’s lip liner was the closest budget brand I could find.  Natio and Sax also do great red lip liners but they lean towards neutral red.

Australis paired with Chanel? Who would have guessed!

I wore this combo when I met Michelle Phan in Melbourne last year.  The wine lip pencil really vamps up the lipstick so you can dial it up or down to your taste.

Clinique’s Spanish Rose is pigmented enough to be worn alone, but it also goes beautifully with Rimmel’s “Indian Pink” lip liner.

Other lip liner brands I love

  • Natio
  • Bourjois
  • Bobbi Brown
  • MAC
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Lancome
  • Clinique
  • Burberry (on my wish list)
  • Serge Lutens (also on my wish list)

Brand: Australis
Range: Go Long Longwear Lipsticks
Shades: Boho, Diva, Preppy, Easy Chic, Trendy, Ghetto, Uber Cool
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Go Long Longwear Lipsticks are a collection of semi matte, intense pigment, long wear lipsticks that promise up to 10 hours of wear
  • Enriched with anti-oxidants to nourish, repair and leave lips looking healthy.  Contains Vitamin E, white tea leaf extract, rosehip oil and mango butter.
  • Available in 8 shades: Boho, Glam, Diva, Preppy, Easy Chic, Trendy, Ghetto and Uber Cool.  The only shade I didn’t get to try was Glam.
  • They apply with a really great grip even with lip balm on, and provide even & densely pigmented coverage.
  • Lasts for hours and doesn’t dry out lips provided you apply it over moisturised lips.
  • Verdict: Despite the shades looking ordinarily similar in the tube, they come alive once on lips, especially Diva & Uber Cool which make my lips pop.  Diva is my favourite shade of them all, as it starts off as a poppy red when worn sheer and comes alive into a vibrant red when layered on.  Ghetto is my next favourite, great for warm skin tones and wintery palettes.

  • Described as a “hot pink with very slight purple pearl”, Maddy describes this as the perfect lipstick for those that love hot pinks but are shy about it at the same time.

  • Thanks Maddy for this gorgeous hot pink swatch!

AUSTRALIS Colour Inject Mineral Lipgloss – Bollywood

AUSTRALIS, LIP GLOSS, Lips, NC20, Yishan | by — October 17, 2011

Brand: Australis
Range: Colour Inject Mineral Lipgloss
Shade: Bollywood
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Contains Kakadu Plum (Vitamin C), minerals, antioxidants and lip defining peptides to smoothe and moisturise lips.
  • Lightweight in texture, non-sticky with a lychee fragrance
  • Available in 10 shades, Bollywood is a sheer red that transforms from bold red to juicy tint once blended.
  • Verdict: Some like their glosses thick (sculpting & line smoothing), some like theirs emollient & lightweight.  You’ll like the texture of this one if you’re the latter, but be careful not to over apply as the colour will slide around.  Bollywood is great for those that want to “ease into” the red lip starting with a sheer tint.

AUSTRALIS Mint Condition Lip Gloss

AUSTRALIS, LIP GLOSS, Lips, NC20, Yishan | by — August 30, 2011

Brand: Australis
Range: Mint Condition Lip Gloss SPF30
Shades: Happily Ever After (Light Pink), Meow With your Mind (Peach Pink), Freely Innocent (Clear Gold Shimmer), Mrs Mellonwellen’s Melons (Melon), Un-Birthday Suit (Brown latte), An Evening With? (Bright Red)
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • SPF30 minty lip gloss packed with guava & Kakadu plum extracts for nourising lips. Also contains cinnamon leaf oil, shea butter and beeswax.
  • Available in 7 shades, of which I got to try 6.  (The other shade is Malice in Wonder Pink, a hot pink).
  • All shade names were named by Australis Facebook fans!
  • Texture is surprisingly thick & needs “intermediate” skill to apply if you just rely on the slanted applicator. The combination of thick formula + pigmented red/melon shades means you need to blend really well to prevent streaks.  Using a lip brush makes it easier to blend fully into the lip surface.
  • My pet peeve is when lip products do not have shade names printed on the actual packaging.  The shade name was on the disposable packaging which I threw out, so now I have to rely on my memory for the shade name.
  • Verdict:  Thumbs up for An Evening With? & Mrs Mellonwelleon’s Melons – these gorgeous shades are a good enough reason to check it out. But to get Holy Grail status from me, the applicator needs to be easy to use for quick touchups on the go.

Click to view enlarged image.  I used a lip brush for the pigmented shades as it can look streaky if not blended well.
Despite the peachy shade descriptions, the other shades all looked kinda same-same on pigmented lips.

These swatches show just how thick the texture is!
