Budget Lip Liners that match Luxe Lippies

I’ve been drafting this post in my head for over a year now & even accumulated a few lip pencils in anticipation that they might be a good match for a potential lippie one day.  But it seems that it wasn’t until I acquired my new camera and wooden accessories that I finally got around to putting this post together.

The inspiration for this post came to me from the many times I’ve tried on a luxury lipstick brand on counter and was even prepared to purchase a matching lip pencil if they had one.  Instead I was suggested a completely different shade (eg. a MLBB lip pencil to go with a red lip pencil, or a rose pink pencil for a hot pink lippie and so on) in an effort to please me.  On such occasions, I immediately make a beeline for MAC and Bobbi Brown to search for a matching lip pencil, but I realise that not everyone is prepared to fork out thirty-ish dollars for it.  So I set myself a challenge of finding lip pencils from budget brands to match higher end lipsticks.

I happened to find matching lipsticks & lip pencils across 4 colour groups – red, nude, two pinks and wine.  I skipped orange as my Inglot coral lip pencil didn’t match any of my orange/coral lipsticks.

The Lip Pencils (L-R):

Revlon Colorstay Lipliner – Red (red)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Indian Pink (pink)

The reason I paired Clinique Chubby Stick in “Heaping Hazelnut” with a warmer nude lip pencil is because I have a flushed lip tone.  You can of course opt for a lighter or warmer nude pencil depending on your lip tone.  I got so many compliments with this combination that one of my friends immediately purchased both items the same day she spotted me wearing this.

Surprisingly there are not that many blue red lip liners out there from budget brands, and Revlon’s lip liner was the closest budget brand I could find.  Natio and Sax also do great red lip liners but they lean towards neutral red.

Australis paired with Chanel? Who would have guessed!

I wore this combo when I met Michelle Phan in Melbourne last year.  The wine lip pencil really vamps up the lipstick so you can dial it up or down to your taste.

Clinique’s Spanish Rose is pigmented enough to be worn alone, but it also goes beautifully with Rimmel’s “Indian Pink” lip liner.

Other lip liner brands I love

  • Natio
  • Bourjois
  • Bobbi Brown
  • MAC
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Lancome
  • Clinique
  • Burberry (on my wish list)
  • Serge Lutens (also on my wish list)

Sweet & Juicy Pink Lips Tutorial

Sweet Plump Pout

Nothing says more feminine than a sweet pink lip.  The perfect sweet pink in my books is a rosy pink with a bit of warmth that blends seamlessly with your lip & skin tone.  Whilst it can be a challenge to find the right “rose pink” lipstick shade, it’s surprisingly much easier to find it in a lip pencil, as many rose pink lip pencils are designed with a lip tone in mind.

When I posted the picture of Step 5 on our Facebook page, so many of you asked what lipstick shade this was!  It wasn’t a lipstick, but rather Bourjois Levres Contour (a lip pencil) in “Framboise”.  I bought it many months ago to add to my lip pencil collection, and it wasn’t until I came across TheBalm Plump Your Pucker in “Pink My Lemonade” that I had a lightbulb moment to pair the two together.  Usually I plan my tutorials ahead to make sure the products work well together, but this was done entirely impromptu and I’m thrilled with the results!

Sweet & Juicy Pink Lips Tutorial

  1. Prep lips with a moisturising lip balm.  I used Molton Brown Pep-Rich Lip Booster, which moisturises, volumises and protects.  Define your lips with a lip pencil in a pink shade similar to your lone.  Extend slightly beyond your natural lip line to create volume.  I used Bourjois Levres Contour Lip Pencil “Framboise”.
  2. Don’t forget to add volume to your bottom lips too! Stretch your bottom lip to make it easier to see.  Connect the sides together, extending beyond the natural bottom lip line.
  3. Fill in your lips entirely using soft gentle strokes.  The moisturising properties of the lip balm helps to soften the dryness of the lip pencil.
  4. Add a dusting of a shimmery highlighting powder to your cupids bow to make them appear more protruding.  Blend with your fingers if needed.  I used TheBalm Mary-Lou Manizer.
  5. Finish off with a coat of plumping lip gloss in a natural pink shade.  I used TheBalm Plump Your Pucker “Pink My Lemonade”.
  6. The plumping ingredients and light reflecting finish (from the highlighting powder, fine gloss shimmers & high shine) will give your lips the alluring illusion of a fuller & juicier pout.

Hope you liked the tutorial!

BOURJOIS Rose Exclusif

BOURJOIS, LIP GLOSS, Lips, NC20, Yishan | by — May 29, 2012

Brand: Bourjois
Range: Rose Exclusif
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • A clear lipgloss that contains pH reactive pigments to self-adjust into a personalised pink based on the pH levels of your lips.
  • Non-sticky, high in shine and good for your lips too with anti-oxidant Vitamins E and C.
  • Promises up to 8 hours of moisture
  • Fool-proof lipgloss as the colour will only show on your lip area
  • Verdict: Unlike other self-adjusting lipglosses that come in a squeeze tube (eg. Smashbox) I like this packaging much more so you won’t get sticky fingers.  At first I expected only a subtle flush of colour, but on my lips it turns into a vibrant rose/berry – like an amplified version of my natural lip tone.   Try this first before splurging on a berry gloss.

Don’t worry about the fuchsia pink appearance, it actually swatches clear on skin.

My lips look plumper than usual because of Too Faced Lip Injection Extreme that I wore earlier in the day.
The Bourjois lipgloss does sculpt lips a little, but there are no plumping effect.

RRP: $22 AUD

I got this as part of a Gift with Purchase.

Brand: Bourjois
Range: Sweet Kiss Natural Lipstick
Shade: 5 – Prune Caresse
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • 100% natural Formula: Natural Beeswax, Shea Butter, Jojoba and Magnolia oil (softening), green tea (anti aging), rose (oftening) and rice (regenerates)
  • Pigments derived from plants and minerals
  • Creamy texture with a sheer finish
  • Interesting packaging (sliding the button helps lipstick slide out of the case)
  • Recommended for: Those that like a sheer red tint that’s 100% natural & safe to eat!
  • Natural ingredients gives me piece of mind, seeing as we ingest a lot of lipstick in our lifetime.

I applied a sheer layer, which ended up being cherry rather than prune.
