Budget Lip Liners that match Luxe Lippies

I’ve been drafting this post in my head for over a year now & even accumulated a few lip pencils in anticipation that they might be a good match for a potential lippie one day.  But it seems that it wasn’t until I acquired my new camera and wooden accessories that I finally got around to putting this post together.

The inspiration for this post came to me from the many times I’ve tried on a luxury lipstick brand on counter and was even prepared to purchase a matching lip pencil if they had one.  Instead I was suggested a completely different shade (eg. a MLBB lip pencil to go with a red lip pencil, or a rose pink pencil for a hot pink lippie and so on) in an effort to please me.  On such occasions, I immediately make a beeline for MAC and Bobbi Brown to search for a matching lip pencil, but I realise that not everyone is prepared to fork out thirty-ish dollars for it.  So I set myself a challenge of finding lip pencils from budget brands to match higher end lipsticks.

I happened to find matching lipsticks & lip pencils across 4 colour groups – red, nude, two pinks and wine.  I skipped orange as my Inglot coral lip pencil didn’t match any of my orange/coral lipsticks.

The Lipsticks (L-R):

Clinique Long Last Lipstick – Spanish Rose (pink)*

The Lip Pencils (L-R):

Australis Lip Pencil – Kiss Me Quick (pink)

Revlon Colorstay Lipliner – Red (red)

Rimmel Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner – Natural (nude)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Wine (wine)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Indian Pink (pink)

The reason I paired Clinique Chubby Stick in “Heaping Hazelnut” with a warmer nude lip pencil is because I have a flushed lip tone.  You can of course opt for a lighter or warmer nude pencil depending on your lip tone.  I got so many compliments with this combination that one of my friends immediately purchased both items the same day she spotted me wearing this.

Surprisingly there are not that many blue red lip liners out there from budget brands, and Revlon’s lip liner was the closest budget brand I could find.  Natio and Sax also do great red lip liners but they lean towards neutral red.

Australis paired with Chanel? Who would have guessed!

I wore this combo when I met Michelle Phan in Melbourne last year.  The wine lip pencil really vamps up the lipstick so you can dial it up or down to your taste.

Clinique’s Spanish Rose is pigmented enough to be worn alone, but it also goes beautifully with Rimmel’s “Indian Pink” lip liner.

Other lip liner brands I love

  • Natio
  • Bourjois
  • Bobbi Brown
  • MAC
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Lancome
  • Clinique
  • Burberry (on my wish list)
  • Serge Lutens (also on my wish list)

  • A full-coverage liquid lipstick that’s richly pigmented & sets into a dry matte velvet finish.
  • Promises to deliver 14 hours of continuous wear without flaking or dryness, thanks to a blend of advanced polymers that deliver exceptional longevity.
  • The formula is very rich and glides on easily but dries very quickly so you have to keep a steady hand.  There’s no need to blot as it sets so quickly & it also doesn’t feather.
  • Whilst it contains skin-conditioning emollients, antioxidant fruit extracts, cili fruit, goji berry, and vitamins A, C and E, I wouldn’t describe it as moisturising .  The ultra matte texture requires a conditioned lip to start with, and whilst my lips stayed consistent throughout the day, it was on the dry side and clearly not as moisturising and softening as Guerlain L’Extrait.
  • It’s also transfer resistant, which means using a tissue only removes 30% of the lipstick (unlike Guerlain which can be easily wiped off with a tissue).
  • Fades gracefully over the course of the day, and the remainder of the lipstick is easily removable with a makeup remover, such as Bioderma Crealine H20.
  • Despite the packaging making it look as though it contains hardly any product, it contains 3 grams which is not far off from Hourglass lipstick (3.5 grams)
  • Empress is described as a deep aubergine shade.
  • Verdict: Hourglass was equally long lasting and pigmented as Guerlain, but not as moisturising and soft in texture due to the ultra matte finish.  The lack of shimmers also makes it more dramatic as a contrasting block colour matte lip.   Overall I still love it anyway, as it’s a gorgeous deep berry matte lip perfect for fall.
  • Link love: Also check out Glitter Geek’s swatch of shade Empress, it looks gorgeous against her warm skin tone.

The finish is more fabric-like compared to yesterday’s review of  Guerlain Rouge G de Guerlain L’Extrait.

My cupids bow isn’t symmetrical because the liquid lipstick set so quickly I didn’t have time to correct it!
There’s also no shimmers giving it a true matte finish.

I purchased this product.

  • Decadence in a bullet: creamy yet silky, richly pigmented yet lightweight the formula is feels moisturising, luxurious and leaves lips with a subtle shine.
  • Contains a blend of skin-smoothing, moisture-enhancing and reparative ingredients such as Vitamin E.
  • It’s hard to see from the photos, but the packaging feels luxuriously heavy with a firm twist required to close & open the lipstick
  • Water-resistant and long lasting. Paraben free and phthalate free.
  • Available in 12 shades, Ballet is described as a “fun feminine pink shade” that looks like baby pink on my lips.
  • Verdict: As I mentioned in yesterday’s review of Nocturnal, these lipsticks are a must have for the lippie lover.  The high grip creamy texture means this lasts comfortably and moisturised for hours & stays looking polished at the same time. I’m so impressed with Ballet, as light blue pink tones rarely sit well on my flushed lip tone.  Ballet hugs my lips beautifully without any streaks, even without lip balm or a lip brush.  HOLY GRAIL.

Swatched over a thin layer of Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm.

RRP: £ 22.00

  • Verdict: The first thing that springs at you when applying, is how much grip there is in the creamy texture without accentuating dry bits. Stays comfortable and moisturised for hours & is long lasting.  Even after hours of wear, the “grip” makes it fade into a light stain that still looks polished (especially if you used a lip brush to define edges).  Forget must-try, this is a must-have for the lippie lover.
