L’OREAL Shine Caresse Lip Colour & comparison with YSL Glossy Stain – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Brand: L’Oreal Paris
Range: Shine Caresse Lip Colour
Shades: Lolita 101, Romy 102, Marilyn 103, Princess 200, Juliet 300, Eve 400, Milady 402, Bonnie 501.
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse Lip Colours have an ultra-light fluid texture, that is a unique formulation of 30% water and 60% oil that boosts lip hydration and is comfortable to wear.
  • The foam applicator has a hole in the centre, specially designed to remove any excess colour leaving a veil-like lustruous finish.
  • The formula takes a while to set, making it easy to fix bloopers while it is still wet.
  • Sheer buildable coverage – 2 layers is perfect for my pigmented lips, but for some shades I needed around as many as 3 layers for photography purposes.
  • Available in 8 shades – Lolita, Romy, Marilyn, Princess, Juliet, Eve, Milady and Bonnie.

Are these dupes of YSL Glossy Stain?

  • Both have lightweight fluid textures that have a non-sticky but slightly tacky finish.
  • Both are long lasting and fade gracefully into a light stain, but YSL lasted slightly longer whilst L’Oreal left more of a stain.
  • YSL sets quicker than L’Oreal where you’re left with that oil/water film that takes just a few more seconds to set.
  • YSL has a more vibrant colour range & is richer in pigment but it’s offset by a water colour finish. Except for a few, most shades from L’Oreal are more subdued and need several layers to build coverage.
  • YSL’s taste is noticeably synthetic, whereas L’Oreal has sweetened theirs slightly in an attempt to mask the synthetic taste – but I can still taste it.
  • YSL does a better job at reviving tired dry lips & camouflaging lip flaws than L’Oreal, which only looks best on healthy lips.

Verdict: With both lip stains coming from the same umbrella company (YSL Beauty is owned by L’Oreal), it’s tempting to draw conclusions that they are dupes for each other.  I’d say that L’Oreal offers very impressive & similar results to YSL but I wouldn’t go as far as saying that one is replaceable for the other.  Where L’Oreal stands out from YSL is how easy it is to control just the right amount & it stains better than YSL if that’s what you like in a lip product.  Even though YSL has more sophisticated pigments, L’Oreal’s finish (once set) is more polished than the water colour finish of YSL that I find messy when combined with shades such as red & coral  hence why I only own one shade from YSL Glossy Stain).

L’OREAL Nutri Shine Lipstick

Brand: L’Oreal Paris
Range: Nutri Shine Lipstick
Shades: Strawberry Juice (B500) & Shiny Apricot (C401)
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Nutri Shine has a unique formula of Royal Jelly (cellular regenerating) and Shea Butter (rich in Vitamins A, E & F) that melts onto lips, keeping it smooth and nourished.
  • The high shine finish is due to light reflecting fine crystal polymers  that creates a juicy finish like a lip balm.
  • Available in 10 shades with colour coded packaging  from intense to nearly nude shades.
  • It glides on really smoothly & melts immediately, leaving lips feeling like it’s wearing a moisturising lip balm – not at all like a lipstick.
  • Compared to Revlon Colorburst Lip Butters, this melts more on lips, is sheerer and more light reflecting with the crystal polymers. It also feels more like a lip balm, whereas Revlon Lip Butters do feel like lipstick (albeit a buttery one).
  • Verdict: A great choice for those that like to keep it sheer, and like the idea of a lipstick that feels like a lip balm that drenches lips with moisture.

Swatched over a thin layer of Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm.

I used a lip brush to create fuller coverage. It’s a lot sheerer when applied directly from the bullet.

L’OREAL Colour Riche Anti-Age Serum Lipstick – Sparkling Rose, Radiant Orange & Pearly Praline

Brand: L’Oreal Paris
Range: Colour Riche Anti-Age Serum Lipstick
Shades: Sparkling Rose (S105), Radiant Orange (S402), Pearly Praline (S303)
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Formulated especially for women over 40, this lipstick features an anti-aging serum in the core, with anti-aging ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid, Collagen and Pro-xylane, to restore moisture and firmness to the lips.
  • Also contains omega 3 and Vitamin E as a protective barrier to prevent lips from drying out.
  • Available in 15 shades, I got to try 105 (Sparkling Rose), 402 (Radiant Orange) and 303 (Pearly Praline).
  • Feels buttery smooth on lips & leaves lips with a healthy shine, helped by the fine light reflecting shimmers.
  • I found the lip-line smoothing properties moderate for a lipstick aimed at women over 40, however it does soften the appearance of lip lines, and the nourishing ingredients revive lips from looking flat and tired into moisturised and supple.
  • The taste of this lipstick is a let down – I can’t put a finger on it, other than to say that it tastes like synthetic fragrance.
  • Verdict: As gorgeous as the shades are, I’m afraid this lipstick is getting a lukewarm review, more so from the expectations it created in my mind when it is supposedly for women over 40.  Whilst I can feel my lips feeling soothed by the anti-aging ingredients, I would love it more if it tasted better and smoothed lip lines more.

Swatched over a thin layer of Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm & applied with a lip brush to create full coverage.
It’s actually a lot sheerer when applied directly from the bullet.
