Top 10 Lippies of 2013

Top 10 Lippies of 2013 Beauty Swatch
After tuning into a whole year of lip swatches, I bet you’re wondering which ones are my favourites beneath the objective reviews.  Whilst I do love finding gems in budget brands, there’s nothing like a sophisticated formulas to make me go weak at the knees.  Here are my top favourite lip products that were featured on Beauty Swatch in 2013 in no particular order.  To view last year’s picks, visit my Top 10 Lippies of 2012 post.

1. Burberry Lip Velvet – A soft wearable matte that gives lips a soft focus demure finish.  Great for those that want an everyday matte finish without looking over dressed.

2. Bobbi Brown Sheer Lip Color – Bobbi Brown’s take on the sheer lipstick trend doesn’t compromise on pigment nor longevity.  Blends seamlessly into every crevice of your lips making it almost believable that your lips are naturally in that colour.

3. Chanel Rouge Allure Moire – My favourite shade “Indecisé” is the ultimate sophisticated pearl nude that looks stunning in all angles of lighting.

4. Chantecaille Lip Chic – Hands down the most moisturising lipstick I’ve ever tried that keeps my lips soft all day.  Also the only lipstick I’ve come closest to hitting pan since my blogging.

5. ck one shine lipstick – The translucent yet lip hugging sheer formula makes even the trickiest of colours look flawless with no slippage or settling into lines.

6. Clinique Chubby Stick Intense – The ultimate low maintenance lippie in a range of punchy colours that doesn’t require lip balm, lip brush or lip liner whatsoever.

7. Sisley Hydrating Long Lasting Lipstick – The most comfortable long wearing moisturising lipstick that makes your lips feel like soft fabric.  Shade “Geisha” is my favourite glamour red.

8.  Shiseido Lacquer Rouge – my favourite liquid lipstick that provides creamy moist coverage.  Comes in a range of “my lips but better” and work appropriate shades for a understated polished look.

9. YSL Rouge Volupte Shine – The punchiest sheer lipstick you’ll come across that’s also moisturising.  Runner up in the 2013 Australian Beauty Awards lipstick category.

10. YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats Lipstick –  The most luxurious matte finish I’ve tried that gives high definition pillowy lips that you typically see in editorials or runways.

YVES SAINT LAURENT Rouge Volupte Shine – Fuchsia in Excess 5 – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Yves Saint Laurent
Range: Rouge Volupte Shine
Shade: Fuchsia in Excess #5
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • YSL’s new Rouge Volupte Shine are a comforting lipstick with a luminous shine, and rich in fruit extracts (vitamins & antioxidants) that leave lips visibly softer and smoother with up to 8 hours of hydration.
  • Melts on application, providing instant hydration (comparable with a lip balm), and is richly pigmented to give lips a wash of vibrant colour.
  • Contains pomegranate and rosemary to reduces fine lines, and hyaluronic acid spheres to hydrate and soften lips.  The candellila resin forms a thin protective layer to seal in moisture and magnify shine.
  • Whilst it’s excellent at hydrating lips, it doesn’t give any sculpting or line smoothing effects.
  • Fuchsia in Excess is described as a “bright luminous pink”.  It looks like a berry red in the tube but sets on lips into a soft fuchsia  after a few minutes.  Once the moisture is absorbed it leaves lips with a stained effect that’s moderate in lasting power.
  • Verdict: If you are contemplating between this and YSL Volupte Sheer Candy Gloss, I recommend hands down the Rouge Volupte Shine.  Despite being so similar in ingredients, Rouge Volupte Shine wins by a mile in both hydration and pigment.  On its own the sheerness makes the edges look diffused making it perfect for days you want your makeup to look vibrant but not overly done up.

Brand: Yves Saint Laurent
Range: Rouge Pur Couture The Mats
Shade: Rose Crazy #202

The must have for the perfect matte lip look.

  • Launched in Fall 2012, YSL Rouge Pur Couture The Mats lipsticks are incredibly plush, creamy & velvety that glides on decadently with a lot of grip.
  • Intensely vibrant pigment with a diffused finish that makes my lips look extra-dimensional & a lot fuller.
  • Comfortable & not at all drying, thanks to jojoba oil for long lasting comfort.
  • Available only in 6 shades (mostly red & wine), but depending on your location the shades stocked on counters seem to vary.
  • Rose Crazy #202 is a blue red, and the brightest red of all.
  • For best results, avoid applying lip balm beforehand (you won’t need it) for a plush matte finish.
  • Long lasting & stays put, meaning it won’t easily smudge on teeth or transfer onto cups.
  • Despite being matte, amazingly it doesn’t accentuate lip lines – it actually DIFFUSES their appearance!!
  • Once set, you don’t actually feel anything on your lips, and there’s no discernible taste either.
  • Verdict: The blue red really pops in real life / natural lighting than the photo suggests.  This has got to be my favourite HG “red carpet” red lipstick.  It achieves that high definition velvet pillowy lips that you typically see in editorials / runways.

YSL Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Balm – Cool Guava #9 – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Lips, LIPSTICK, NC20, Yishan, YVES SAINT LAURENT | by — October 31, 2012

Brand: Yves Saint Laurent
Range: Volupté Sheer Candy Glossy Balm
Shade: Cool Guava #9
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • A lip balm & sheer lipstick in one that dresses your lips with vitamin and antioxidant rich fruit extract, and hyaluronic acid spheres.
  • Ultra light with a “moisture lock” film is thanks for Candellila Resin, which forms a thin protective layer on lips to lock in all the lip conditioning ingredients.
  • Cool Guava is a sweet baby pink that coats lips evenly with a sheer veil, and doesn’t streak as long as your lips are in good condition.
  • I wouldn’t wear this if you have particularly dry or flaky lips,  as the glossiness and contrast of baby pink against my pigmented lip tone makes it a challenge for lip flakes to be concealed.  It also does a moderate job at softening dry lips,  and isn’t as effective as my favourite lip balms.  If you are having a “good lip day” or simply not prone to dry lips, then the glossiness works a treat.
  • Verdict:  Whilst I can imagine people would use this all year round (sheer tint for summer, moisture barrier for winter), the baby pink hues in Cool Guava makes this a summer lippy only for me.  Being so effortlessly to apply, I can definitely see myself using this more often than its creamy cousin Rouge Volupté.

I had to wait for a “good lip” day to photograph this, as this lippy doesn’t do a good job of concealing lip flakes.

YVES SAINT LAURENT Rouge Volupté Lipstick SPF15 – Opera Rose #29

Lips, LIPSTICK, NC20, Yishan, YVES SAINT LAURENT | by — June 14, 2012

Brand: Yves Saint Laurent
Range Rouge Volupté Silky Sensual Radiant Lipstick SPF 15
Shade: Opera Rose #29
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Rouge Volupté Lipstick packaging has gone to be one of the prettiest and luxurious out there.  Its contents are equally luxurious, with an extremely creamy formula that glides smoothly into a luminous satin finish.
  • Densely pigmented to give lips full coverage, which lasts for several hours and remains comfortable on lips.
  • Available  in 29 shades, Opera Rose is a medium neutral pink.
  • It has a tendency to slide around a bit, due to the incredibly silky formula.
  • Although the lipstick is moisturising initially, the moisture doesn’t last as long as the pigment, so if you have particularly dry lips I recommend wearing it over a moisturising lip balm.
  • Verdict: Whilst Rouge Volupté is incredibly long wearing with amazing creamy pigment, the texture is not for everybody, especially those prone to dryness and deep lip lines.  A little goes a LONG way, so start with a thin layer and build up to your desired coverage.  Alternatively apply a little in the centre and blend with fingers for a blotted effect.

Worn over a thin layer of Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm.
In natural lighting, the actual shade looks closer to my arm swatch.

Look what just one regular swipe of YSL Rouge Volupté produced on my arm!
If I had known I wouldn’t have wasted so much.

I purchased this product.
