My favourite “my skin but better” BB & CC creams

Long time readers of Beauty Swatch will know that I prefer BB creams over foundation for daily wear, as it’s less prone to clogging my skin and cause unnecessary breakouts.  Also my freckles are becoming more prevalent as each year passes, and I want to enjoy the translucence of my skin for as long as I can before I have to use heavier coverage bases to conceal pigmentation.  Here are 3 of my current favourite BB & CC creams that give a “my skin but better” effect that I wear on weekends or during hot summer days.

Favourite BB CC Creams

Clinique Moisture Surge CC Cream SPF 30 Hydrating Colour Corrector

I know many people had trouble with this formulation as it’s on the dry side and is known to “ball up” on some people.  Initially I had the same experience too, but I realised it was because I trialled it during winter and my day cream wasn’t moisturising enough for what my skin needed, creating a dry surface that was difficult for the CC cream to bind to.  After I tried this during a 30 degree summer day, and switched my moisturiser to something richer, this CC cream worked a treat in giving my skin a natural sheer “pick me up” that improved the sallowness of my skintone.

As coverage is very sheer, you’ll need a concealer for blemishes. The finish is almost satin / demi-matte on my dry skin, so I recommend using a moisturiser underneath to help the product blend.  I also recommend avoiding layering on too many serums underneath this CC cream to avoid it from balling up.

What they say:

It is an instant complexion perfector designed to enhance skin’s natural radiance while leaving it hydrated and protected.  Clinique’s scientific experts incorporated advanced colour correcting technology that utilizes light to enhance radiant, glowing and healthy skin.  Dual-layered colour correcting optics scatter light multi-dimensionally to neutralise skin’s complexion for an instantly brighter, natural glow.  Dull, ashy skin appears more luminous and brighter; sallow, yellow skin turns into a peachy glow; and a blotchy redness is neutralised.

Available in 4 shades

  • Very Light
  • Light (this is my shade, and it gives me a peachy glow)
  • Light Medium
  • Medium Deep

RRP: $45 AUD available at Clinique.

LA ROCHE-POSAY UVIDEA XL Melt-In BB Cream SPF 50

In contrast to the Clinique CC Cream, which took a bit of experimentation to get right, La Roche-Posay UVIDEA XL Melt-In BB Cream was love at first application.  It applied smoothly and made my skin instantly look brighter with a dewy and glowy finish.  It also deflected light away from my skin imperfections (Eg. fine lines, acne scars & freckles), so despite coverage lying between sheer and light, my complexion was noticeably improved and by the time I added concealer the overall result was flawless for a weekend look.

What they say:

Like Photoshop for the skin, the UVIDEA BB Cream covers imperfections whilst the creamy consistency melts into the skin, making it easy to apply.  The result is a flawless finish and a healthy-looking glow.  Suitable for all skin types, features light-reflecting pigments, which complement the skin’s natural tone.  Blemishes, fine lines and dark spots are covered for a radiant, unified complexion.

Available in two shades

  • 01 Light  (this matches my skin tone perfectly & brightens my complexion)
  • 02 Medium

RRP: $28.95 AUD (30ml) available online at Terry White Chemist or visit the La Roche-Posay website for your nearest stockist.

THE BODY SHOP Moisture White Shiso BB Cream SPF 25

This BB cream gives medium coverage (the highest out of the three products featured in this post), is incredibly long lasting and brightens complexion giving it a perfected but natural glow.  I brought this as my one-and-only base makeup for my trip to Gold Coast for Problogger Event 2013, and it lasted me from 7:30am through to 10pm.  Like the Clinique CC cream, this is not ideal for dry skin in dry weather, but lasts amazingly well in hot humid weather.  The texture is thicker than the other two, but I’m okay with it given I’m used to the thicker textures of most Korean brand BB creams.

What they say

This tinted lightweight skincare BB cream contains ingredients from our bestselling serum. This enriched cream gives natural medium coverage as it brightens, soothes and protects skin against UV with SPF 25 PA+++.   Our Moisture White™ Shiso skincare is formulated with shiso, vitamin C and liquorice, and Community Fair Trade organic aloe vera. This skin-loving shiso range targets hyperpigmentation, improves luminosity and evens skin tone.

Available in 1 shade

RRP: $48.95 AUD (30ml) available at The Body Shop
