MAYBELLINE Color Whisper – Review, Photos, Swatches

Lips, LIPSTICK, MAYBELLINE, NC20, Yishan | by — September 25, 2013

Tags: , , , , , ,

Brand: Maybelline
Range: Color Whisper
Shades: Petal Rebel, Oh La Lilac, Pink Possibilities, Who Wore It Red-er, One Size Fits Pearl, Lust for Blush, Orange Attitude, Mad for Magenta
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Maybelline Color Whispers are a sheer lipstick with a translucent gel formula that doesn’t contain heavy waxes or oils.
  • They’re ultra lightweight and glide smoothly leaving a moist sheen.
  • Despite the moist gel formula, I didn’t find this moisturising enough for my dry lips and needed to prep lips with lip balm first for a smoother finish.  I also disagree with comparison that these are similar to Revlon Lip Butters as the latter is much more buttery with a smoother finish than Color Whisper.
  • On my flushed lip tone, the paler shades appeared streaky and accentuated my lip flaws.  Whereas the darker shades like Mad for Magenta and Who Wore It Red-er  gave my lips a punchy popsicle tint.  Orange Attitude is a wearable sheer orange, and Lust for Blush will appeal to those that love their MLBB’s.
  • Verdict: If I have to choose one shade to try from this range, it would be Mad for Magenta as it’s a really easy-to-wear magenta that looks good even when sheer & slightly “undone”.  The 8 shades featured in this post are the only shades available in Australia, but Berry Ready is another shade I recommend (available overseas) trying if magenta is not your thing.

REVLON Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain – Romantic, Smitten, Cherish, Darling – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

LIP TINTS, Lips, NC20, REVLON, Yishan | by — May 14, 2013

Brand: Revlon
Range: Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain
Shades: Romantic, Smitten, Sweetheart, Cherish, Darling
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain’s are a lightweight lipstain with a pigmented flush of colour that’s long lasting and exceptional staining power that lasts for hours and hours.
  • No lip balm required beforehand – the smooth gel formula glides on smoothly & softens lips for a supple, conditioned and moistured finish that looks fuller.
  • Comes in a retractable chubby crayon applicator – no sharpening required.
  • Available in 10 shades – Honey, Darling, Cherish, Lovesick, Sweetheart, Smitten, Charm, Romantic, Precious and Adore.
  • Light peppermint fragrance.
  • Tip: Make sure your lips are well exfoliated beforehand, otherwise this balm will stain in uneven patches.
  • Verdict: As a testament to how amazing the staying power is, I had to photograph the lip swatches over 2 days (well spaced apart) and in a strategic sequence starting with the lightest to the darkest shade to make sure the stains from the previous swatch doesn’t interfere with the next shade.  I’m also amazed by how pigmented & moisturising they are without the need for any lip balm.   If you decide to change your lip colour just as soon as you applied it, the best makeup remover for taking off this stain is Clinique Take the Day Make Up Remover for Lids, Lashes & Lips.

Swatched without any lip balm.

Darling & Cherish are better suited to pale lip tones as it contrasts against pigmented lips. That said, I liked the sweet pink stain that Cherish left on my lips as opposed to the red/fuchsia stains from the other shades.

The pink shades may look deceptively similar on my arm, but as you can see they are strikingly different on lips.

L’OREAL Shine Caresse Lip Colour & comparison with YSL Glossy Stain – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Brand: L’Oreal Paris
Range: Shine Caresse Lip Colour
Shades: Lolita 101, Romy 102, Marilyn 103, Princess 200, Juliet 300, Eve 400, Milady 402, Bonnie 501.
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • L’Oreal Paris Shine Caresse Lip Colours have an ultra-light fluid texture, that is a unique formulation of 30% water and 60% oil that boosts lip hydration and is comfortable to wear.
  • The foam applicator has a hole in the centre, specially designed to remove any excess colour leaving a veil-like lustruous finish.
  • The formula takes a while to set, making it easy to fix bloopers while it is still wet.
  • Sheer buildable coverage – 2 layers is perfect for my pigmented lips, but for some shades I needed around as many as 3 layers for photography purposes.
  • Available in 8 shades – Lolita, Romy, Marilyn, Princess, Juliet, Eve, Milady and Bonnie.

Are these dupes of YSL Glossy Stain?

  • Both have lightweight fluid textures that have a non-sticky but slightly tacky finish.
  • Both are long lasting and fade gracefully into a light stain, but YSL lasted slightly longer whilst L’Oreal left more of a stain.
  • YSL sets quicker than L’Oreal where you’re left with that oil/water film that takes just a few more seconds to set.
  • YSL has a more vibrant colour range & is richer in pigment but it’s offset by a water colour finish. Except for a few, most shades from L’Oreal are more subdued and need several layers to build coverage.
  • YSL’s taste is noticeably synthetic, whereas L’Oreal has sweetened theirs slightly in an attempt to mask the synthetic taste – but I can still taste it.
  • YSL does a better job at reviving tired dry lips & camouflaging lip flaws than L’Oreal, which only looks best on healthy lips.

Verdict: With both lip stains coming from the same umbrella company (YSL Beauty is owned by L’Oreal), it’s tempting to draw conclusions that they are dupes for each other.  I’d say that L’Oreal offers very impressive & similar results to YSL but I wouldn’t go as far as saying that one is replaceable for the other.  Where L’Oreal stands out from YSL is how easy it is to control just the right amount & it stains better than YSL if that’s what you like in a lip product.  Even though YSL has more sophisticated pigments, L’Oreal’s finish (once set) is more polished than the water colour finish of YSL that I find messy when combined with shades such as red & coral  hence why I only own one shade from YSL Glossy Stain).

BOBBI BROWN Brightening Lip Gloss – Lilac Pearl – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

BOBBI BROWN, LIP GLOSS, Lips, NC20, Yishan | by — June 6, 2012

Tags: ,

Brand: Bobbi Brown
Range: Brightening Lip Gloss
Shade: Lilac Pearl
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Launched as part of the Brightening Nudes Collection, the collection is inspired by glowing skin, sparkling eyes and lush lips to make you look like you’re lit from within.
  • There are 3 soft shades in the Brightening Lip Glosses in the collection – Lilac Pearl (featured), Pink Opal and Pink Lilac.
  • Unlike other sheer shimmery lipsticks out there,  Lilac Pearl gives lips a pearlescent lilac sheen that’s high in shine & reflects light amazingly well.  Lip swatches don’t do it justice.
  • As with all Bobbi Brown lip gloss formulas, it’s moderately sticky and sculpts lips to create the illusion of a fuller pout.
  • For those that like to layer glittery gloss over lipstick, there is also a Crystal Glitter Lip Gloss (in tube packaging) in the collection.
  • Verdict: Highly recommended for those who love their shimmers super-fine & want their lips catching the light without looking like a disco ball. The lilac tones in this gloss would look gorgeous on top  of mauve lipstick, or for those who want a lilac twist to their pink lip.

The photos don’t do it justice.  Swatch it yourself to see just how light reflecting and pearlescent it really is.

MAYBELLINE Super Stay 24 Hour Lip Color

Brand: Maybelline
Range: Super Stay 24 Hour Lip Color
Shades: Everything except for Everlasting Wine
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Incredibly long lasting lip colour formulated with “lip gripping” polymers and waxy film formers to resist budging.
  • The shade range is split into four colour categories: Red/Coral, Pink, Nude/Brown and Plum.
  • Dual ended packaging, with the liquid lip tint in one end and a glossy stick balm in the other.
  • To test whether it truly lasted 24 hours, I applied a full coat in the afternoon, wiped lips after eating dinner and went to bed with whatever was left on my lips.  The next morning, the residue was STILL THERE.  I know it’s gross to sleep with a lipgloss, but it didn’t smear on the sheets and I really wanted to test its 24 hour claims.
  • Incredibly moisturising and comfortable without any awkward taste.
  • The formula grips lips very snugly, to the point that it doubled the number of my lip lines.
  • Verdict: After having disappointing experiences with long lasting lip glosses from Revlon and Max Factor, I have to say this deserves a whopping 9/10 and in my “highly recommended” list.  To get 10/10 from me, Maybelline needs to make the formula line-smoothing and not accentuating.

Timeless Toffee

Due to the lip lines being accentuated with this lip colour, I’d recommend it only to those with smaller lips with a smooth surface. I didn’t swatch them all as the formula is very hard to remove. I needed 2 rounds of cleansing oil plus 2 rounds of toner to remove these from my arm.
