Brand: Avon
Range: Ultra Glazewear Lip Gloss
Shades: Fiery Red, Mauve Movement, Pink Watermelon, Nude, Tangerine Gleam, Intense Plum, Nude Muse, Tickled Pink
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Avon Ultra Glazewear Lip Glosses are a moisturising gloss that has a soft texture that doesn’t feel sticky or tacky.
  • Sculpts lips into a high shine lacquer finish won’t feather or bleed
  • Available in 9 shades – 8 of which are featured here, and the other shade is Clear (not pictured).
  • Very mild scent that reminds me of cupcakes.
  • Verdict: Some shades are sheerer than others, with the most pigmented ones being Intense Plum, Fiery Red and Tangerine Plum.  My favourites are Mauve Movement (a mauve MLBB shade) and Pink Watermelon (sheer pink with shimmers).  For just $14.99 these are very reasonably priced for their quality, and are versatile to be worn both on their own or layered over lipstick for a dimensional finish.

Budget lip liners that match luxe lippies

Budget Lip Liners that match Luxe Lippies

I’ve been drafting this post in my head for over a year now & even accumulated a few lip pencils in anticipation that they might be a good match for a potential lippie one day.  But it seems that it wasn’t until I acquired my new camera and wooden accessories that I finally got around to putting this post together.

The inspiration for this post came to me from the many times I’ve tried on a luxury lipstick brand on counter and was even prepared to purchase a matching lip pencil if they had one.  Instead I was suggested a completely different shade (eg. a MLBB lip pencil to go with a red lip pencil, or a rose pink pencil for a hot pink lippie and so on) in an effort to please me.  On such occasions, I immediately make a beeline for MAC and Bobbi Brown to search for a matching lip pencil, but I realise that not everyone is prepared to fork out thirty-ish dollars for it.  So I set myself a challenge of finding lip pencils from budget brands to match higher end lipsticks.

I happened to find matching lipsticks & lip pencils across 4 colour groups – red, nude, two pinks and wine.  I skipped orange as my Inglot coral lip pencil didn’t match any of my orange/coral lipsticks.

The Lipsticks (L-R):

Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet – L’Exuberante (pink)

Nars Pure Velvet Lipstick – Vesuvio (red)

Clinique Chubby Stick – Heaping Hazelnut (nude)*

Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick – Nocturnal (wine)

Clinique Long Last Lipstick – Spanish Rose (pink)*

The Lip Pencils (L-R):

Australis Lip Pencil – Kiss Me Quick (pink)

Revlon Colorstay Lipliner – Red (red)

Rimmel Exaggerate Full Colour Lip Liner – Natural (nude)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Wine (wine)

Rimmel Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Stay On Lip Contouring Pencil – Indian Pink (pink)

The reason I paired Clinique Chubby Stick in “Heaping Hazelnut” with a warmer nude lip pencil is because I have a flushed lip tone.  You can of course opt for a lighter or warmer nude pencil depending on your lip tone.  I got so many compliments with this combination that one of my friends immediately purchased both items the same day she spotted me wearing this.

Surprisingly there are not that many blue red lip liners out there from budget brands, and Revlon’s lip liner was the closest budget brand I could find.  Natio and Sax also do great red lip liners but they lean towards neutral red.

Australis paired with Chanel? Who would have guessed!

I wore this combo when I met Michelle Phan in Melbourne last year.  The wine lip pencil really vamps up the lipstick so you can dial it up or down to your taste.

Clinique’s Spanish Rose is pigmented enough to be worn alone, but it also goes beautifully with Rimmel’s “Indian Pink” lip liner.

Other lip liner brands I love

  • Natio
  • Bourjois
  • Bobbi Brown
  • MAC
  • Chanel
  • Dior
  • Lancome
  • Clinique
  • Burberry (on my wish list)
  • Serge Lutens (also on my wish list)

Hope you liked this post!

ESTEE LAUDER Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipsticks – Review, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Estee Lauder
Range: Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipsticks
Shades: Demure, Rebel, Rock Candy, Naked
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Launched as part of Estee Lauder’s “Pretty Naughty” collection, the Pure Color Sheer Matte Lipstick are a refined lightweight matte formula that leaves a satin finish with light reflecting pearls.
  • They hug the lips snugly upon application, and in just a sweep you get an ultra matte pigmented finish that instantly transforms your lip texture into a matte fabric-like texture.
  • Infused with fruit extracts that add moisture, and highly pigmented.
  • Available in 4 shades – Demure, Rebel, Rock Candy & Naked.
  • Verdict: I must admit, when I first heard about the launch of the “sheer matte” formula I was intrigued to try it as Estee Lauder’s makeup are renowned for their sophisticated textures.  Despite looking pretty in the delicate slim packaging & swatching beautifully on my arm, this didn’t work at all for my lip condition – which has a lot of lip creases and looks unforgiving in dry formulas.  Except for Demure (a deep pink), all other shades were also too pale against my flushed lip tone.  The only lip condition that I can imagine this working for is smooth lip surfaces (ie. younger lips) with a pale lip tone.
  • I didn’t see any point in featuring unflattering lip swatches proving that it didn’t work, so I shall leave you with pretty picture instead of how much better it looks in the packaging and on my arms.

Brand: Chanel
Range: Rouge Coco Shine
Shade: Secret 85
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Chanel Rouge Coco Shine’s are renowned for their comfortable, translucent moisturising formula that’s available in both sheer and more recently pigmented shades that are packed with 30% more pigment.
  • The secret to the gentle moisturising formula is Chanel’s Hydratendre complex that softens and plumps lips for a healthier fuller appearance.
  • More sophisticated than a lip tint or sheer lipstick, Rouge Coco Shines stay on well considering it’s a sheer lipstick, gently dressing the lips with a veil of colour that has minimal slip.
  • Secret is from the sheer range and is a peachy beige that gives a translucent milky nude finish on my lips, an effect I often get with beige tones.
  • Verdict: I recommend Secret for pale lip tones, as it’s not so forgiving on pigmented lips especially if you also have lip lines like I do.  That said, no one really looks up close to my lips except for all you readers of Beauty Swatch.  At arms length, the overall nude effect is really alluring as it looks like a soft plush nude veil that glistens in light.

I photographed this the same day as the Rouge Allure Moiré lipsticks I posted earlier this week, which goes to show you can hide a multitude of lip flaws with the right shade of lipstick and formula.

CHANEL Rouge Allure Moiré – Indécise 125 – Review, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Chanel
Range: Rouge Allure Moiré
Shade: Indécise 125
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Rouge Allure Moiré is Chanel’s newest addition to their signature lipstick range, featuring a refined mother-of-pearl effect for a sophisticated luminous lustre on lips.
  • Available in 6 permanent shades – Farouche, Ambigue, Indécise, Suprenante, Etonnante, Énigmatique, and 2 limited edition shades – Impulsive and Audacieuse.
  • Indécise is a sheer pearl nude that’s simply exquisite.  It somehow manages to deliver an ultra-nude effect thanks to the way the pearl finish glimmers in light, and yet it has a translucence that blends seamlessly with your own lip tone without it looking like a “mask” on your lips, nor a single streak in sight.
  • Rouge Allure’s are one of my all time favourite lipstick formulas as they’re plush and comfortable, apply smoothly both with and without lip balm,  don’t slip around and once the creaminess sets it becomes a soft satin finish.
  • Verdict: Indécise is the ultimate sophisticated pearl nude.  The pearl finish is so stunning that I can’t stop tilting my head in all sorts of angles in awe of how amazing it looks on my lips in all angles of lighting.

The packaging is the same as the signature Rouge Allure range, where you open/close it with a single click so that it stays in place in your bag.

The pearl finish is the most subtle when you look straight ahead, possibly due to my lip shape.
For me it really comes to life once you look sideways, or tilt your head at that “selfie” angle.
