TOM FORD Lipstick – Violet Fatale – Review, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Tom Ford
Range: Lipstick
Shade: Violet Fatale
Swatched by the lovely: Katherine

Each Lip Color is Tom Ford’s modern ideal of an essential makeup shade. Rare and exotic ingredients, including soja seed extract, Brazilian murumuru butter and chamomilla flower oil, create an ultra-creamy texture with an incredibly smooth application. Specially treated pigments are blended to deliver pure color with just the right balance of luminosity.

  • Katherine describes Violet Fatale as purple in the tube but fuschia on the lips.  It has medium-high pigmentation and a lot more opaque than Cherry Lush.
  • Read the rest of Katherine’s blog post to find out her verdict on this lipstick’s moisturising and long lasting properties.
  • Thanks Katherine for the lovely swatch!

MAYBELLINE NY Color Sensational Vivids Lip Color – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Maybelline
Range: NY Color Sensational Vivids Lip Color
Shades: Shocking Coral, Fuchsia Flash, Vivid Rose, Neo Red, Hot Plum, Pink Pop, Vibrant Mandarin, Electric Orange
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • Maybelline has launched their boldest and brightest lipstick range with 8 vibrant shades in the Color Sensational Vivids Lip Color
  • Creamy smooth to apply, with a moderate grip and features Maybelline’s signature ingredient – honey nectar – to nourish and condition lips.
  • Whilst it’s lacking in sculpting and smoothing properties, it certainly makes up for it with saturated “undilluted” pigment.
  • Initially it had a fruity scent that reminds me of fruit chews – however the scent seems to have evaporated now probably because of the heat wave that’s wilting both me and my makeup collection.
  • Verdict: Shocking Coral is my favourite as such a shade is hard to come by.  The most difficult shade was Pink Pop which didn’t sit well on my lips – possibly because my lips were exhausted by the end of a swatching shade.  Overall it’s a fun and bold collection that will appeal to those that like a punchy statement lip.

ESTEE LAUDER Violet Underground Collection – Reviews, Photos, Swatches

Brand: Estee Lauder
Range: Violet Underground Collection
Shades: Pure Color Velvet Lipstick (Black Cassis, Violet Crush) and Pure Color Gloss (Chaotic Currant, Rebellious Violet)
Swatched by yours truly: Yishan

  • The inspiration for Estee Lauder’s 2013 spring collection is the “ultimate fusion of high style and street chic”, with deep, vibrant violet and fuschia tones.
  • The violets in the collection consist of Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Violet Crush (plush matte violet), and Pure Color Gloss in Rebellious Violet (dazzling violet) that has layers of crystal reflection.
  • The deep wine shades consist of Pure Color Velvet Lipstick in Black Cassis (plush matte deep wine) and Pure Color Gloss in Chaotic Currant (plum wine) that’s high in shine.
  • The lipsticks are matte & non-drying, however I recommend wearing them on well conditioned lips to prevent lip flaws from being accentuated.
  • I also found the lipstick sit well on some lip balms over others – my first attempt at swatching was not nearly as successful as the second attempt where I used Nivea Lip Butter, which softened lips without altering the lipstick texture.
  • The lipsticks look fine on their own provided your lips are in excellent condition, but I find they have more oomph once paired with the matching gloss – not to mention that it also hides a few lip flaws or two.
  • As for wearing glosses on their own, Rebellious Violet gives lips a polished wash of violet and sit better on lips than Chaotic Currant.
  • Verdict: Whilst both shades are beautiful in their own ways, the violets in this collection were the ones that really pulled at my heart strings.  Tom Pecheux has really nailed the violet shade that I’ve been coveting, giving it a sophisticated edgy look.   Whichever shade of the two that pulls your heart strings, I recommend getting both the lipstick & gloss.

Random fact: I have a habit of drawing over the lip line with dark shades for an opulent look, whereas I tend to “stay within the lines” with feminine shades.

Both lip images are swatched over a layer of Nivea Lip Butter that’s been pressed into the lips.

MAC Cremesheen Glass – Narcissus

Brand: MAC
Range: Cremesheen Glass
Shade: Narcissus (Daphne Guiness Collection)
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • Launched as part of the Daphne Guiness Collection, Narcissus is described as a “dirty eggplant’ shade.
  • The shade is a glossy dupe of MAC Lipstick in “Bust Out!” from the Surf Baby Collection.
  • Non-sticky with MAC’s signature vanilla scent.
  • Texture is smooth, creamy and quite opaque compared to other Cremesheen Glass shades.
  • Verdict: This violet shade is more like it!  Especially compared to yesterday’s anti-climax with Bobbi Brown’s “Ultra Violet”.  I love the opaque finish so I can wear it alone without looking OTT.  For those that rarely (or never) wear violet, make an exception and try this out.  You might just surprise yourself on how wearable it is.

BOBBI BROWN Sheer Color Lip Gloss – Ultra Violet

Brand: Bobbi Brown
Range: Lip Gloss
Shade: Ultra Violet
Swatched by yours truly: akisa

  • The Neon & Nudes Collection features 3 new shades in the lipgloss range – Ultra Violet, Cosmic Pink & Citrus.
  • Seeing as Bobbi Brown lipglosses are the only ones I’ve ever reached the bottom of, I’m very pleased that she has increased the size of all her lipglosses.  AND FINALLY they now come in a doe wand!!
  • With soothing botanical extracts, these lipglosses are smoothing with a minty scent, and are really sheer despite the neon appearance in the tube.
  • Verdict: The sheerness felt like an anti-climax when applied directly on lips. This type of gloss is best for layering over lipsticks to add a twist to fuschias or bring out the purple hues in violets.
I like how it gives a flush of colour on my lips, just don’t expect a bright violet shade if worn alone.
