I remember every detail about my first lipstick – except for the brand, where all I can remember is that it was masstige & no longer exists.
It was a neutral “my lips but better” (MLBB) shade in a creamy formula that was very waxy & had a semi-matte finish. It wasn’t one of those MLBB shades you see now – back then it was more brown, somewhat like the 4th shade from left in the above pic.
The reason I remember this lipstick so well was because of the uninspiring shopping experience. Back then in the mid 90’s, there wasn’t much for a teenager to choose from, and the formulas were either came in cream or frost finish. Plus they were stocked in really low shelves & I have hazy memories of bending down to swatch the brands stocked at the bottom.
My second and third lipstick shades were equally memorable for all the wrong reasons. The second was a bronze lipstick from an Elizabeth Arden GWP that I wore more often that I should have (bronze lips + plain face ventures into zombie territory), and my 3rd lipstick was a frosty mauve pink from Shiseido – inspired by a trend I saw in Japanese magazines from the early 2000’s.
Finally I was onto something when I purchased Bobbi Brown Lip Gloss in “Buff” – another MLBB shade that I religiously used at least 2 tubes of. After trying Bobbi Brown’s lip gloss (and heavily influenced by a brand snob / beauty enthusiast friend) it was that moment that I became a lipstick snob and never went back to masstige brands ever since. Or frosty lipstick.
